Long term, cost effective, accurate monitoring of radon emissions into the air from waste dumps

Ground random emission, esp. from waste dumps, is determined by a method, novel in measuring concn. over the long term, in the air layer close to the surface, at several, vertically displaced measuring points. Emission is determined from the concn. differences. Also claimed is a suitable instrument with heads (1,2,3,4) held above the ground (9), on a stand (5). Electret based passive heads are used for long term measurement; active instruments for shorter periods. A rod mounted coaxially on the stand is set in the ground, giving support, and carries an active subsurface measuring device (7). Above the surface are wind speed instruments (8 a) and a thermometer. Stands are located on a predetermined surface, in accordance with the ground structure and meterological conditions, at predetermined separations (2).
