A radiotelephone has a timer shutoff feature and a roam shutoff feature. If the timer shutoff feature is selected, a processor (310, Fig. 3) determines if a flip Fig. 4) has been closed or a call terminate or end key or button (410) has been pressed 106. If either of these events occurs, a timer is started 108, and the radiotelephone is placed in an off mode 114 if the timer exceeds a predetermined period of time 110 before another phone call exists 112. If the radiotelephone is in a roam mode 116 and no phone call exists 118, the radiotelephone is placed in the off mode 114. The user may select either the timer shutoff feature or the roam shutoff feature, Fig. 1, or in an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2) both features can be activated simultaneously.
