The inflator includes a housing (12) containing an ignition device (26), a quantity of pyrotechnic gas general material (32) and an annular filter (34). The housing (12) includes a cup-shaped base member (14) having an annular bottom wall (16) with a central opening (16a) for access to the ignition device (26) and an integrally formed, upstanding ported side wall (18) extending perpendicularly from the bottom wall (16). The side wall (18) has a radially inwardly deformable, free upper end portion (44) forming a retaining flange for securing a top wall (20) in place thus closing off an upper end portion of the housing (12). The top wall (20) has a depressed outer peripheral edge portion (21) facing and sealed with the downwardly and radially inwardly deformed upper end flange (44) of the single side wall. <IMAGE> |
