摘要 Two manifolds 24, 34 have branches 22, 32 that are configured to supply two gas streams to the intake valve 14 of each cylinder. The two streams enter the cylinder separately through the valve 14 so as to produce a stratified charge within the engine cylinder. The manifold 24 supplies a metered quantity of air within which the fuel to be burnt is dispersed when the charge is in the engine cylinder and the manifold 34 supplies EGR gases or air under the control of a valve 90. A non-return valve 23 is arranged in each branch 22 to permit gases to flow in the branch only in the direction towards the intake valve 14. The manifold 34 may have branches (32, 32', Fig. 3) leding to each cylinder intake valve to provide lateral rather than radial charge stratification. Fuel is supplied to the individual branches 22 through injectors 60, to the manifold 24 or direct to the cylinders. The valves 50, 84 controlling flow to the manifolds 24, 34 may be linked to vary the flows in inverse proportion. <IMAGE>
