PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To widen the area of engagement between ratchet wheel teeth and a movable pawl in a rope-type starting apparatus for internal combustion engines, and facilitate the assembly of the starting apparatus. SOLUTION: The starting apparatus for internal combustion engines includes a rope pulley 10, a freewheel coupling having a driving coupling part on the pulley 10, and a driven coupling part on an engine flywheel. The driving coupling part includes a ratchet wheel 14, and the driven coupling part includes a movable pawl adapted to engage the ratchet wheel 14. The ratchet wheel 14 is frusto-conical in overall shape and has its relatively smaller-diameter end facing the flywheel. An outer leg of the pawl is angled to correspond to the cone angle of the ratchet wheel 14. |
