<p>A grain growth process for forming a tabular grain emulsion involves the following steps. An aq. dispersion contg. at least 0.1 wt.% Ag as Ag halide grains contg. at least 50 mol.% AgBr and having an ave. thickness less than 0.06mm is provided. The dispersion has a pH of 2-8 pref. 3-7, and a stoichiometric excess of Br to Ag ions limited to a pBr of at least 1.5. An iodo-substd. 8-hydroxyquinoline is added as a grain growth modifier and the dispersion is held at at least 40[deg]C until the ave. equiv. circular dia. (ECD) of the grains is at least 0.1mm greater than the ECD of the initial grains. Also more than 50% of the total grain projected area is accounted for by tabular grains with (III) major faces, an ave. aspect ratio of at least 5, and an ave. thickness of less than 0.07 mm.</p> |
