PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound capable of being easily hydrolyzed to give 5-nitro-2-acetylthiophene useful as an intermediate for producing medicines, agricultural chemicals, functional polymers, etc., in a high yield. CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R is 1-4C alkyl), e.g. 5-nitro-2(α-me thoxyimino)ethylthiophene. The compound is preferably obtained by nitrating a 2-(α-alkoxyimino)ethylthiophene of formula II with a nitrating agent preferably comprising mixed acids or acetyl nitrate. The reaction is preferably performed by reacting 1 mole of the compound of formula II with 1.5-2.5 times of the nitrating agent at -5 to 10 deg.C.
