PURPOSE: To improve impact strength and to enable continuous use for a long time by using a round bar with an uneven surface as a coating bar which is used for measuring and smoothing coating applied on a belt-shaped base material to be coated such as paper and a film, and specifying the Vickers hardness of the surface. CONSTITUTION: A coating bar which is particularly used for the application of a polyester film on the surface consists of a round bar with uneven surface having Vickers hardness of 1800 or more. The round bar having a diameter of 3-30mm is formed to satisfy the conditions in which the center line average roughness Ra (μm) in a roughness curve in the longitudinal direction of the surface is 1-60-μm, and the ratio between the ten point average roughness Rz (μm) of the cross section curve in the longitudinal direction of the surface and the maximum roughness Rmax (μm) is expressed by 0.5<=-Rz/Rmax<=0.1. As a material of a metal rod having hardness below 1800, alloy steel such as carbon steel and stainless steel, nonferrous metal such as copper and aluminum, and their alloy are used.
