PURPOSE: To provide an inexpensive metal carrier wherein the temp. can be elevated up to the activation temp. for a carried catalyst in a short time and high purification rate of an exhaust gas can be kept for a long time. CONSTITUTION: A metal carrier 1 consists of flat sheets and corrugated sheets 3 and is constituted in a shape wherein the flat sheets and the corrugated sheets 3 are alternately laminated and wound into a spiral shape. In the flat sheets and the corrugated sheets 3, slit parts 4 wherein rectangular slits are formed on a plurality of places, are formed approximately from the central part in the axial direction to the one end direction. These slits are formed at an equal intervals and continuously in the orthogonal direction to the axial direction of the metal carrier 1 and are formed at equal interval and continuously in the axial direction, too. In addition, the slits adjoining to each other in the axial direction are positioned alternately. On the other hand, a high density carrying layer wherein a catalyst substance is carried highly densely from the end part of the upstream side of an exhaust gas in a specified range 52a is formed on the surfaces of the flat sheets and the corrugated sheets 3 and a low density carrying layer wherein the catalyst substance is carried with a low density is formed in a range 52b wherein the range 52a is excluded. |
