PROCESS FOR RECYCLING PLASTIC WASTE

PURPOSE: To provide a versatile process for recycling plastic wastes whereby the thermal decomposition of the wastes can be accomplished without classifying them according to their kinds and the decomposition residues can advantageously be used. CONSTITUTION: Plastic wastes are decomposed by heating them to a heat decomposition temperature at which they can be decomposed into a heat decomposition product and solid decomposition residues, and the solid decomposition residues are heated to a temperature higher than the heat decomposition temperature. The plastic wastes are heated in the presence of a metal hydroxide to the heat decomposition temperature. Plastic wastes containing polyvinyl chloride are heated in the presence of a metal hydroxide to a temperature at which the polyvinyl chloride can be dechlorinated, and then heated to a temperature at which the plastic can be decomposed into a heat decomposition product and solid decomposition residues.
