The invention relates to a protein mixture prepared from serum obtainable by treating serum or a protein mixture obtained from serum with an adsorbent which consists of particles with a hydrophobic core and at least a partly hydrophilic outer surface, in a quantity such that when the protein mixture is added to a minimal essential medium for animal cells an increased proliferation of the cells and an increased protein production by these cells is obtained.
