Treatment of aq. effluent comprises a biological denitrification step (A) in anoxic medium followed by a biological nitrification step (B) in aerated medium, and a final clarification step (C), with parts of mixed liq. from (B) and of sludge from (C) being recycled to (A). An exogenous carbon source (I) is added to the effluent to increase the COD:N ratio. The new features are that downstream of the recirculation from (B), there is a post-denitrification step (D) in anoxic medium applied to effluent from (B), and (I) is added to step (D). Also new is equipment for carrying out this process.
