Drying of surface treated items 10, preferably stained items of wood in known continuous flow driers often leads to extraction of colour by contact between the items and the carrying and propulsion means 8 of the drier, which subsequently leads to uneven colour coating on the item, thus requiring further processing. In order to avoid the extraction of colour, a method is provided and a continuous flow drier 2 for placing immediately adjacent to a colour coating machine, such that the items 10 are transferred to the drying unit without the use of aids, such that at least the downward facing surfaces 28 on the items 10 transferred from the colouring machine are pre-dried by means of high- temperature blowers 24 having linear exit openings 20 oriented crosswise to the direction 22 of propulsion of the items, before these come into contact with the carrying and propulsion means 8 of the drying unit. The principle used is that of the evaporation of the water in the water-based staining agent on and in the surface of the item by affecting the surface for a short time with the amount of energy sufficient to evaporate the water, without thereby causing a heating of the mass of the item as such. <IMAGE>
