A hydrodynamic torque converter has a rotatable housing (3) with a pump wheel (15), and a rotatable turbine wheel (8) driving an output shaft (14). Hydraulic fluid in a converter circuit transmits rotation of the pump wheel (15) to the turbine wheel (8) except when torque is transmitted directly from the housing (3) to the turbine wheel (8) on engagement of a bypass clutch (2, 4, 5, 6). The bypass clutch includes an axially-movable piston (2) to engage the housing (3) through at least one friction lining (4, 5). The friction lining (4, 5) is formed with a number of recesses for the passage of the hydraulic fluid from the converter circuit, the recesses (17) extending between the radially outer edge (22) and the radially inner edge (25) of the friction lining (4, 5) in a direction having radial and circumferential components.
