A clutch actuating device comprises a drive, eg. electric motor 4, a gearing 7 converting movement of the drive into a linear movement of an output member 31 connected to hydraulic master cylinder 9. Movement of the gearing 7 being limited by at least one stop 81. A clutch position controller comprises a monitoring device for detecting supply of energy, eg. voltage, to and direction of operation of the drive 4 and an incremental transmitter 40 for detecting changes in position on movement of the gearing. A change in position detected by the incremental transmitter 40 following supply of energy to the drive 4 is used to derive a new position of the gearing 7 relative to its previous position, and where no change in position is detected by the incremental transmitter 40 following supply of energy to the drive 4 a reference position of the gearing is defined, in which the gearing 7 engages a stop 81. Transmitter 40 comprises a pulse ring 41 secured to output shaft 14 and having magnetic poles 42. These are scanned by, for example, Hall-effect sensors 43.
