A method of electrolytically polishing metals which are apt to form an oxide film, such as ferritic stainless steel or aluminum alloy, and an electrolytic solution therefor. The solution has a pH value of 6 to 10 and the dissolved oxygen has been purged with an inert gas or hydrogen.
