The process is for detecting faults in the public lighting network which has lamps (N) fed from sections (S) and supply points (D). Multiplexers and a microprocessor are used to measure values of voltage and current (U,I) in a section of the network (S), also to determine the corresponding values of real and reactive power (P,Q) and their ratio Q/P. The values of reactive power (Q) and the ratio of reactive to real power (Q/P) are compared to reference values (VINF) and (VSUP) to determine whether a fault exists. If a fault does exist, a signal is sent and/or recorded and the reference values are modified to allow for the faulty equipment in later measurements.
