Sterilising apparatus for sterilising a container comprises an elongate light bulb (4, 18, 111) adapted to emit ultra violet light when energised by microwaves, and a shield (16, 110) substantially surrounding said bulb (4, 18, 111) and being adapted to support a container (6) so that said bulb is located within the container. The shield (16, 110) is transparent to microwaves.
