In the device to determine the redn. in cleaning capacity of a catalytic converter (13) in a combustion engine exhaust gas-pipe (14), the catalytic converter has a catalyst (30) to purify the gas. The device has a first detector with a sensor (12) in the exhaust line so that it lies on the upstream side of the catalytic converter. The sensor detects a specific component (O2) in the exhaust gas and produces a first detection signal (fF) for the detected component. A second detector (25) detects the component flowing on the downstream side of the converter and gives a second detection signal (fR). A measuring device (23) provides a cleaning signal (fR/fF) for the degree of redn. in cleaning capacity using the first and second signals. A comparator (23) compares the cleaning signal with a reference value (THC(x)) and delivers a comparison result due to the redn. in catalyst cleaning capacity. The device also comprises: a deterioration measuring device (23) to obtain the degree of deterioration of the sensor (12) on the first detector and to deliver its result; a control device (23) to control the output of the comparator according to the output from the deterioration measurer.
