The process involves the placing of a layer of coarse wooden material onto a solid base, and the application of a loose heap of shavings onto the top of it. The heap is dried for a limited period, with the moisture from the interior of the heap being drawn off by the longitudinal and transverse convective air flows through the coarse wood layer. In order to accelerate the drying process, is introduced into the heap. This may be material with a high content of green matter, such as bark or needles.
