The subframe (1) has a pair of longitudinal members (2) running parallel to the length of the bodywork. Each end of at least one transverse member (3, 4, 5) is connected across the longitudinals at legs (6). The inner end of the lower suspension arm (10) has a swivel connection to a bearing (8) within the legs. The leg, when attached to the longitudinal member, forms a connection which has a high stiffness when subjected to loads from the suspension arm. The stiff leg connection causes the loads from the suspension arm to be carried by all transverse members. The size and shape of section of the remainder of the transverse member can be optimised.
