The control device (1) has a control unit (5) for supervising an automobile function during normal operation, with an independent test mode for performing a fault detection routine. The test mode can be initiated by supplying a test mode activation signal to the input (E) of the control device, which differs from the signal obtained at the input during the normal operation of the control unit. Pref. the control unit uses a microprocessor and an associated memory holding the control programmes and the test routine programme.
