Overcoming ringdown in medical ultrasound imaging

A method of overcoming the ring down problem in medical ultrasound systems comprises the steps of generating a reference scan and updating it on the basis of a long term running average over a period of time significantly greater than the period between successive scans, and then subtracting that running average from the current acquired A-scan to remove the ring down.
