PURPOSE: To realize an exchange in which the exchange processing of an ATM cell is realized by the software and a sufficiently high processing speed is achieved. CONSTITUTION: The exchange has plural interface accommodation (IF) sections 10-1 to 10-n and an ATM cell from each input port of each IF section is transferred to the output port of a desired IF section. Furthermore, the exchange has a cache (C) bus 91-1, a microprocessor PE1-1 connecting to the C bus, plural input output means connecting respectively to the plural IF sections and the C bus and applying IF processing to ATM cells inputted/outputted to/from the IF sections, cache memories 21-1, 22-1 connecting to the C bus and having cache areas allocated being at least part of the memory space of a PE and storing tentatively the set ATM cell by using the input output means as at least part of the cache areas, and a processing means using the PE for at least part of exchange processing for ATM cells stored in the cache memories 21-1, 22-1.
