PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal electric field sensor which enables a user to use a liquid crystal with a threshold characteristic as well. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal electric field sensor applies an electric field parallel with the surface of a liquid crystal cell 50. An electric field direction measuring apparatus comprises the liquid crystal electric field sensor with an electric field parallel to the surface of the liquid crystal cell 50. The surface of the liquid crystal cell 50 is arranged facing an electric wire 40 orthogonal thereto. This electric field measuring apparatus includes a light pulse transmitter 20 and receiver 30, and a plurality of sets of the liquid crystal electric field sensors each comprising a reflection type liquid crystal cell 50' coupled to the light pulse transmitter 20 and receiver 30 through a photocoupler 8. Or, it includes the light pulse transmitter 20 and the light pulse receiver 30 and a plurality of sets of the liquid crystal electric field sensors each comprising a transmission type liquid crystal cell 50 connected to the light pulse transmitter 20 and the light pulse receiver 30 through a optical fiber 1 and the photocoupler 8.
