PURPOSE: To secure relatively satisfactory reproduced images even when bright light is made incident on a CCD to cause smears. CONSTITUTION: When the release button 56 of a shutter 14 is pushed, during a period from the determined time after the push until the starting time t1 of an exposure period t1 -t2 , vertical transfer signalsϕV1-ϕV4 are outputted and the vertical transfer line of the CCD 15 is driven. During the driving period, during the time from the start time t0 of a vertical scanning period including the exposure time t1 -t2 until the start time t1 of the exposure time t1 -t2 , the vertical transfer line is driven at a high speed and unrequired electric charge stored in the vertical transfer line is swept out. After the exposure time t1 -t2 , the vertical transfer signalsϕV1-ϕV4 are outputted and signal electric charge stored in a photodiode is read.
