In response to this detected atmospheric temperature, the CPU 51 determiness the lighting time of the fluorescent lamp 13 before the multiplier factor setting of the amplifier 58 which amplifies the output signals of the line sensor 14 and lights the fluorescent lamp 13 only during this determined lighting period. The CPU 51 takes the reference plate data brought about by the reflection from the white reference plate due to the light of the fluorescent lamp 13 from the output of the A/D converter 59 at the time when the lighting period of the lamp 13 terminates and sets the amplification factor of the amplifier 58 at the optimum value.
