PURPOSE: To provide a catalyst which can decompose and reduce harmful components, NOx in particular, in diesel engine exhaust and burn and remove carbon type fine particles, unburnt hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, etc., and a method for purifying exhaust gas using the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst for decomposing nitrogen oxides prepared by a process in which a fire resistant three-dimensional structure is coated with a copper-containing zirconium powder which is obtained by mounting copper and a catalytic active oxide of at least one kind of a metal selected from the group consisting of wolfram, gallium, nickel, manganese and iron, and cobalt on zirconium powder and a method for decomposing diesel engine exhaust using the catalyst. |
