Method for the purification of potato 5-lipoxygenase by phase distribution in nonionic Triton X-114 detergent. It comprises (a) homogenizing potato tubers in an acetate buffer, EDTA and Triton X-114 mixture, filtering and centrifuging to obtain a crude extract, (b) subjecting the crude extract to temperature-induced phase distribution with more Triton X-114, (c) subjecting the clear supernatant containing the lipoxygenase to fractionated precipitation using ammonium sulphate. The potato 5-lipoxygenase is useful as a model for studying the behaviour of human 5- lipoxygenase which is involved in inflammation phenomena and asthma.
