The distance measuring device includes a switch for generating a start signal and a distance measurement device for measuring a distance to an object in response to the start signal. A storage device stores distance data of at least one division point, the division point or points dividing a measurement range of the distance measurements into several distance ranges. A sensor device detects which distance range the measured distance falls during a distance measuring operation. The distance data of at least one division point are derived from a distance measured to an object during an initial range setting phase. A timer starts time counting in response to the start signal and outputs a time-up signal after a predetermined period of time.
