Preparing caesium formate and neopentyl glycol comprises reacting formaldehyde (HCHO) and caesium hydroxide (CsOH) in a liquid (especially aqueous) state in the presence of isobutyraldehyde, where the mole ratio HCHO:CsOH:aldehyde is 1:1:1 to 3:2:1, e.g. 1.5:1.2:1 to 2.5:1.7:1 or 1.8:1:1 to 2.2:1.5:1 at a reaction temperature 0-100 deg C especially 30-70 deg C. |
