Simple, environmentally friendly biological degumming of ramie fibres

In biological degumming of ramie fibres by the action of microorganisms naturally present on and/or in the fibres, (a) a boiling lye is recovered by boiling the fibres in aq. NaOH soln.; (b) this is added to a retting charge adjusted to pH 11-12 and 30-40 deg. C.; and (c) degumming is allowed to take place by fermentation with the microorganisms.
