The orbital telescope includes a membrane-type mirror (45) and an associated membrane (46) which protection of the mirror membrane. These are mounted within a sleeve (2) with a protective outer sheath (3). The structure is foldable, and includes integrated electronics for controlling the shape of the mirror. The image observation system is placed at the focus of the mirror, and a further stage is placed at the centre of curvature of the mirror in order to determine and recognise its shape. A light can be provided to illuminate an object viewed by the telescope. The shape of the membrane-type mirror can be controlled by a stack of membranes of different diameters, held together at their common centres.
