The engine has no cylinder head and an auxiliary 2-stage piston (6, 7) for each cylinder, operated in opposition to the normal piston (5), via a common crankshaft (19). This has a single crank pin for the crankarm (17) of the main piston of each cylinder and a pair of crank pins on either side, for a pair of crankarms (18) controlling the movement of the auxiliary 2-stage piston. Pref. the first piston stage of each auxiliary 2-stage piston lies within the engine cylinder, the other stage uses for the pre-compressor and, the crank pins for the main piston and the auxiliary 2-stage piston can be offset by between 170 degrees and 190 degrees.
