Fractionation of mixt. of lanolin acids

Mixts. of lanolin acids are fractionated by (a) dissolving the raw material in a polar organic solvent or mixt., (b) pressure-treating the dissolved mixt., at between -5 and 30 deg C and 10-70 bars with gaseous carbon dioxide, (c) sepg. the hydroxyfatty acids pptd. as solids and (d) recovering the remaining fatty acids from the organic solvent by distn. The solvent is an up to 5C ester, ketone and/or alcohol, esp. ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and/or ethanol. The concn. of the acid mixt. in the solvent is 10-50 (pref. 20-40) wt.%, and the acid mixt. is added to the solvent at 15-25 deg C. The hydroxyfatty acids are sepd. by filtration, and are washed with liq. CO2 at < 30 deg C and < 100 bars, using 0.5-100 g of liq. CO2 w.r.t. 1g of hydroxyfatty acid mixt.
