The invention relates to a steering shaft for motor vehicles with two sub-shafts inserted one into the other at their ends with a non-circular cross-section in their overlapping region. In order, on the one hand, to couple the two sub-shafts to each other in a simple manner without play and, on the other hand, to ensure as gentle and jerk-free axial insertion and pulling apart as possible, the sleeve-like, outer sub-shaft is provided at its free end with a cup-shaped, radial widened portion into which there is recessed an annular, rubber-elastic moulding. The inner contour of this moulding corresponds approximately to the inner contour of the sleeve-like, outer sub-shaft or the outer contour of the inner sub-shaft, and its axis of symmetry is - when the inner sub-shaft is not inserted - rotated by a small angle in the circumferential direction counter to the axis of symmetry of the inner contour of the outer sub-shaft.
