The automobile door (4) has a contactless sensor (6) attached to the outer door edge (5), for determining the relative spacing (a) from an adjacent obstacle, with corresponding limitation of the door opening angle to prevent a collision between the door and the obstacle. Pref. the opening angle limitation is controlled by a microprocessor receiving the sensor signal and automatically released as the distance forn the adjacent obstacle increases.
