Detergent powder is drawn by suction from a detergent container (39) outside the dish washer (1) and conveyed pneumatically to a washing chamber (4-6) and, in the case of multiple tank machines, preferably to second or subsequent washing chambers (4-6) configured along the path taken by the detergent. Precise quantities of detergent can easily and economically be dispensed directly from the sale packaging into the dish washer (1) without any need for major modifications to the overall process and without disrupting the pre-set wash process.
