The invention concerns a spirit level with a pair of elongated limbs (1, 2, 9) which can open and close about a common pivot (8) and are provided with gauges (10, 12), the limbs being intended for placing on a level surface in order to measure the inclination thereof. Each of the limbs (1, 2, 9) has a first and a second longitudinal section (9) with a connecting bent section (1); one longitudinal axis of the first longitudinal section of each limb continues offset from, parallel to and in one plane with the longitudinal axis of the associated second longitudinal section, the rotation axis (8) is in the bent section (1) of both limbs (1, 2, 9); the first longitudinal sections (9) of the two limbs are of a substantially equal first length and the second longitudinal sections of the two limbs are of a substantially equal second length.
