Rapid inerting of very large vessels following an emergency e.g. in a PWR

Plant for injecting inerting gas into a vessel (1), esp. the containment shell (1) of a nuclear power reactor, which is connected to an inert gas storage vessel (5), via the feed line (2) and shut-off valve (6), is claimed. The liquified inert gas, exerting several atmospheres of pressure at 0 deg C, is held (5) at a temp. of pref. 20-30 deg C. For inerting, the shut off valve (6) is opened, and the fluid inerting gas is vapourised at the throttling device (6,22) which is also in the line, by the controlled successive reduction of pressure, through e.g. 5-15 bar. An outlet (7,27) of the feed line (2) mixes the inerting gas with the vessel atmosphere, reheating it. In addition to the equipment described, the method of use is also claimed.
