Four sealing rings (4.0-4.3) co-operate with a stuffing-box (2) surrounding the shaft (3). The annular chamber (5.2) between the inner pair of rings (4.1,4.2) is supplied (7) with compressed air from a source (12) via a reducing valve (13), condensate trap (14), pressure regulator (15) and gauge (16), an electromagnetic valve (17) and an airtight reservoir (18) with a float switch (19). A pref. electronic draught gauge (T) abaft sends a signal to a control panel (37) operating on air lines (22,32) to additional reservoirs (26,33) supplied from the main lubricant tank (30). One (26) of these feeds the annular chamber (5.3) between the innermost sealing rings (4.2,4.3). The other (33) opens into the sump (S).
