A compact gas discharge envelope for a fluorescent lamp has the form of a glass tube wound in a double spiral about a common axis (1) and having the ascending (2) and descending (3) coils connected by a crossover section of tube (4) at the lamp's outermost and largest diameter. The tube is mounted on a standard plug-in on screwed base (9) via the end terminations (13) which are spaced to accommodate the associated electronic starter encapsulation (not shown). The pitch and included angle of the conical form are chosen such as not to mask the light output in both axial and radial directions.
