Radial flow cold wall reactor vessel (10) comprises a vertically disposed shell (12) defining a contact zone. shell (12) has top and bottom ends. Vessel (10) ends are closed by a top dome (13) and the bottom dish head (14). Vessel (10)had fluid inlet conduit (16) in the top end, and fluid outlet conduit (17) in the bottom end. Inlet and outlet (16, 17) are for the introduction of fluid reactant and removal of fluid product from the reactor vessel (10). refractory insulating lining (15) covers the vessel (10) interior. Vertically disposed within shell body (12) is a cylindrical first basket (19) with a fluid pervious wall having a closed top end (20) and an open bottom end (21). Bottom end (21) is in communication with outlet (17). Vertically disposed within shell body (12) is a cylindrical second basket (22) with a fluid pervious wall surrounding the first basket (19), and defining therebetween a containment space (18) for contact material such as catalyst.
