The clearance maintenance device has a rod (14) displaceably mounted in a sleeve (12) in the direction of the sleeve longitudinal axis. A drive housing (16) is attached to the sleeve and contains a rotatably mounted drive shaft (22) which on rotating drives a worm gear (18) to displace the rod. An end (60) of the rod projecting from the sleeve forms the first support and an end (62) of the rod turned away from the sleeve forms the second support. The drive shaft is arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve.
