The invention concerns an electric toothbrush in which the toothbrush shaft (2) has a rocker (12) which takes the form of a tenon block and has a radial cam (13). The rocker (12) is made to oscillate by a driver (9) which is driven by an eccentric (7) and performs a rotating movement. The toothbrush shaft (2) engages with the rocker (12) in a groove (11) in the driver (9), whereby the driver (9) moves the toothbrush shaft (2) both backwards and forwards in the direction of its longitudinal axis (3).
