The mode converter includes a substrate (1) of lithium niobat with a monomode optical waveguide (3) which extends between two end faces of the substrate along its surface (2). An electro-acoustic converter (8) is arranged on the surface. The mode converter also includes a strip-shaped layer (9) of proton-exchanged lithium niobat, which is covered by the optical waveguide at least in a region behind the electro-acoustic converter. The proton-exchanged layer is formed with a depth such that a guide of the extraordinary mode in the proton-exchanged layer of the waveguide is guaranteed.
