A waveguide type optical device is provided. Waveguides of titanium metal formed in a crystal substrate of LiNbO3 having an electro-optic effect. A buffer layer of a dielectric material is formed on the crystal substrate and coplanar waveguide electrodes of a signal electrode and two ground electrodes are formed on the buffer layer. A substrate of a low dielectric constant material formed on the back surface of the crystal substrate and having a slit or concave formed on portions other than end portions of the side to be opposed to the back surface.
