PURPOSE: To provide a method for bleaching anα-sulfo-fatty acid ester by which the bleaching can be carried out with an aliphatic alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an organic peroxide at a high bleaching efficiency to improve the color tone. CONSTITUTION: This method for bleaching anα-sulfo-fatty acid ester is to bleach (A) theα-sulfo-fatty acid ester in the presence of (B) an organic peroxide with (C) an aliphatic alcohol and (D) hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, peracetic acid, etc., are used as the component (B) and methanol, etc., are used as the component (C). The amounts of the components added based on 100 pts.wt. component (A) are preferably 0.5-5 pts.wt. component (B), 10-20 pts.wt. component (C) and 0.5-5 pts.wt. component (D). The bleaching temperature is preferably 40-100 deg.C. Furthermore, anα-sulfo-fatty acid ester prepared by sulfonation, etc., of, e.g. an alkyl ester of a saturated fatty acid of the formula RCH2 COOR' (R is a 10-18C alkyl or an alkenyl; R' is a 1-3C alkyl) wit-h sulfuric anhydride diluted with an inert gas is preferably used as the component (A).
