The method uses a system with a central software distribution unit, an expert system (8) and a systems generator. The expert system and the systems generator process a customer request for provision of a telecommunications service conforming to a customer service specification and produces a service implementation solution expressed in terms of protocol stacks. The system also communicates the service implementation solution to the software distribution unit (10) which distributes the software modules to subscriber access equipments affected by the implementation solution so that the subscriber access equipmemt operates in accordance with the protocol stacks specified in the service implementation solution.
