PURPOSE: To provide a document processor which can automatically judge and set a proper input mode process (process function at input time) by referring to characters nearby an input position. CONSTITUTION: A CPU 1 reads the contents of a document buffer (TBUF) and a beer memory (DBUF) in a cursor register (CR) 6 and a RAM 3 to obtain characters nearby a cursor displayed on the display screen of a display device (CRT) 9, and decides and automatically set an input mode at the cursor position on the basis of the character information.
